How do we inspire one million girls to code? When you ask girls what they love, Google’s research indicated they rank coding next to working as a prison guard. What’s their number one? Helping people. So, instead of presenting coding as an end itself, we framed it as a gateway to something girls already love.

And therefore, the platform “Made With Code”was born, beginning with a high-profile launch event in New York. The campaign website  introduced girls to the idea that “Things you love are made with code,” showing them how coding can make whatever they love bigger and better. Suddenly, girls were interested. To inspire and engage them, we created a launch film and 13 curriculum-based and mobile-first coding projects, shot 13 documentaries, and included a first-ever directory for finding camps and classes on the campaign website. To support an epic launch in June 2014, we launched with the first-ever mass-produced 3D printed object: a 3D bracelet girls can code!  In the process, we didn’t just teach girls coding. We helped start a revolution.

A doorway to tech for girls.

  • “‘Made with Code’ is a crusade we’re on together to ensure women’s voices are represented in the increasingly digitally defined world we live in. We could not fathom working with more capable collaborators—in every sense of the word—than Mira and her team. It’s been a privilege to make this all happen together.”
